Valentine's Day Recipe

This Valentine's day, why not whip up something sweet for your sweetheart! We are craving this Deconstructed Strawberry Shortcake recipe by Ina Garten for House Beautful. Try it and share your experiences !
Please note, recipe serves 6.
FOR THE SHORTCAKE
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
12 tablespoons (1½ sticks) cold unsalted butter, diced
2 extra-large eggs, lightly beaten
1/2 cup cold heavy cream
1 egg beaten with 2 tablespoons water or milk, for egg wash

FOR THE STRAWBERRIES
2 pints fresh strawberries
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons Grand Marnier liqueur
Sweetened whipped cream

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
2. Sift the flour, two tablespoons sugar, the baking powder, and salt into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Blend in the butter on low speed and mix until the butter is the size of peas. Combine the eggs and heavy cream and, with the mixer still on low, add to the flour and butter mixture. Mix until just blended.
3. Dump the dough onto a well-floured surface. Flour a rolling pin and roll the dough ½-inch thick. You should see lumps of butter in the dough. Cut 16 biscuits with a two-inch plain round cutter and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
4. Brush the tops with the egg wash. Sprinkle with sugar and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the tops are lightly browned and the insides are fully baked. Cool.
5. To serve, toss the strawberries with the granulated sugar and Grand Marnier. Place the berries in martini glasses, top with a dollop of whipped cream, and serve with two small shortcakes on the side.
"If you have the time to marinate the strawberries for a half hour, they'll make a sauce that's delicious."

U2 Brings Soldier Field ALIVE in Chicago

This past weekend, some lucky fans of U2 (Yours Truly included) were the super-lucky ones to catch the U2 360 World tour kickoff concert in Chicago.

Frontman Bono and Lead Guitarist The Edge were at their very best as they brought the crowd to their feet. The Circular stage as described by NBC "a 90-foot-tall canopy that looks not unlike the pronged and sinewy mandible of The Predator, or an overlarge aloe plant" took 4 days to put together.

The interesting aspect to the concert was not only the Super-Grand Stage, but also references to the Burmese opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, before "Walk on" with about 50 people walking on stage holding photos of the Burmese leader as face masks. Prior to "One" a video was played with words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The Closing was Specatular and beyond words. Rollingstone.com sumarizes the closing as follows
"After a crowd sing-along “With Or Without You” Bono told the crowd to wave hold their cellphones into the air. “Turn this place into the Milky Way,” he said as a giant disco ball came out on top of the stage. The simple effect truly made it seem like the stadium had reached outerspace, with thousands of cellphone lights turning into stars. They ended with an emotionally charged “Moment of Surrender,” perhaps the best song they’ve written this decade. As they took their final bows to thunderous applause, Bono looked quite pleased as he walked up to the mic one last time: “Thank you,” he said. “What an opening night!”

With Valentine's day fast approaching, here are some ways in which you can share whats in your heart with your dear ones.

i) Get a post-it notepad with pink and red post-its or heck you can go with the color of the season -- yellow and grey --. Write heartfelt messages and add to a glass jar or bottle. Seal and tie a red ribbon around the neck of the jar. VOILA! Simple and sweet.

ii) Enjoy baking ? Then bake a favorite recipe for your sweetheart. Using a heartshaped cookie cutter, cut shapes, then arrange the hearts in a platter with a candle in the center. HEARTWARMING goodness indeed !

This blog posting is dedicated to all moms and their special little ones !! We salute you PePPeRMoMs !!

What is about being a mother that inherently creates these feelings to give the utmost, give everything we have to our children. And the most amazing thing is that all of us as mothers bond as we have the same feelings for our little ones.

I recently met some amazing women from "First Candle". First Candle is a national nonprofit health organization uniting parents, caregivers and researchers nationwide with government, business and community service groups to advance infant health and survival. With help from a national network of member and partner organizations, they work to increase public participation and support in the fight against infant mortality.

These fantastic people have a mission in life to help babies get to their first birthday safely. The statistics are scary - every day there are several families in America grieving over the loss of a baby. Even the thought of something like this would bring tears to our eyes. A cause to help prevent these occurences by bringing awareness, helping research and development is truly an important and noble cause much required in our community.

Take 1.. Take 2.. Action !!

Well, its all about action around here...what with photo shoots for newspaper photographers and kids running amuck during these lazy summer months !! Well, its not all busy and not all lazy. I am somewhat bragging here, but eh, I am feeling downright proud of where thepepperkids.com is today as compared to 6 months ago.

Thanks to Sandy Bosch, we were featured in the local newspaper 2 weeks ago.

Sandy did such a fantastic job and we cannot thank her enough. We probably don't deserve all the kind words, but we do really really appreciate them. Well, more press is on the way with Babytalk magazine in September.

I somehow think PR is like pregnancy. You create a baby, you love it, its the thing that is top of mind, you really care about it (hint - thepepperkids.com - my third one!). Then you engage in a 9 month long wait while the world picks up (read PR) and the "bump" starts to show. The appearance of the bump in ==PRLAND== means some PR starts to occur. So our "bump" is appearing a little over the usual 4 months+( ehhmm I am embellishing here but I think I am allowed to .. right?). Well, at least the bump appears which means we are progressing !!

And progress is good. Now I am tired and I have a craving for some chocolate - well, its all part of the "pregnancy" !!

Lets start at the very beginning ... a very good place to start... and we are not going to sing Do Re Me, Fa So La Ti... I do remember it ! Wo !!

Here I am thinking of where and how it all began. Well, the name 'The Pepper Kids' was born on a SouthWest Airlines flight to Seattle from Chicago August 2006 towards the end of the summer vacation. It was our last few days before going back to school so we decided to spend them in Bill Gates' Microsoft city, Seattle.

The name was a "family affair". My husband and I with our two children (ages 7 and 9) doodled on a SouthWest Airlines napkin (the one with the map of the USA) all through the flight brainstorming about the possibilities or rather impossibilities of finding something that resonated with all of us. You can see the challenge. Yet, we hit it !! "The Pepper Kids" worked !! It had the word "kids" that my 7 year old thought was extremely important. It had the word "Pepper" which my 9 year old kinda liked as zesty and colorful. It had the "P" and the "K" sound which my marketing science studies told me worked wonders (we have to see about that) and my husband liked the name too (Jackpot!) Chiching !

As soon as we landed, the very first thing we did after checking into the hotel was to register the url http://www.thepepperkids.com

To make perfect things even more perfect, the Asian tradition in which peppercorn packs are added under children's pillows when they sleep at night to protect them is a timeless symbol of good fortune, love and appreciation.

The name is inspired to add zest and spice along with timeless symbols of good fortune, love and appreciation.
